About Colour
Colour therapy is a healing method that uses colour to bring about healing or restoration of a person’s well-being. In colour therapy light comes into play, since what we perceive as color is simply light being absorbed and reflected at different wavelengths. Light being a living energy, it follows that colour is also a living energy. Colour therapy focuses on how this energy can be applied on the living energy or life-force in our bodies to bring about healing.
The basic tenet of colour therapy is that it is possible for healers to attune a person’s body through the exposure of that person’s chakras and meridians to a specific colour as required. This is because the chakras and meridians radiate their own color depending on their energy vibrations. In a healthy person, these energy vibrations are in equilibrium, but in an unhealthy one, the energy balance is broken. Thus, when the chakras and meridians are exposed to the appropriate color which would restore the energy balance, the person is restored to health. In this type of therapy colour is used to correct both physical and psychological disorders, as the chakras and meridians affect both physical and psychological functions.

To better understand how colour therapy works, it is important to first understand the psychology of colour. Colour psychology basically relates to the psychological effects of colour, and how it affects human behavior. Different colours have different effects on human beings. The colors in the red area of the colour spectrum are related to feelings of warmth as well as anger. The colours in the blue area of the spectrum are related to feelings of calmness as well as sadness and indifference. Thus, colour therapy learns from colour psychology how colour affects the mind and extrapolates it holistically to the body and spirit.
Another form of therapy, which like colour therapy focuses on chakras, is Chakra healing. A ‘chakra’ is like a spinning wheel of energy found on various parts of the body. There are seven primary chakras and about a hundred secondary ones, also known as meridians. During illness, there is a blockage in the flow of energy through these chakras causing one to be unwell. Through chakra healing, these blockages are removed by healers and the proper energy flow restored, causing the person to be well again.
Pranic healing is another healing therapy that is based on the use of ‘prana’ to balance and transform the body’s energy. ‘Prana’ means life-force and is the invisible living energy that maintains the body alive and in good health. Pranic healing is a no-touch energy healing method where healers work on the energy body or aura that surrounds and permeates the physical body to bring about healing in the physical body. The healer does this by transmitting life energy to the aura which absorbs it and distributes it to the organs, muscles and other parts of the physical body.
Crystal healing is a therapy healing people using crystals or gems as healing tools. These crystals are placed on or around the body and bring about healing due to the vibrations that they resonate. This vibration resonance is determined by their mineral content, their geometry and their color frequency. Thus one can see a relationship between crystal healing and colour therapy. The vibrations emitted by crystals affect certain parts of our electromagnetic system, and if crystals with the correct vibration resonance are placed at the right locations on our bodies’ electromagnetic system, negative energies are released, leading to healing.
A final form of healing therapy which draws certain similarities to colour therapy is sound therapy which also recognizes the concept of living energy, chakras and meridians, and the need to ensure an energy balance. Sound therapy considers that our bodies have energy frequencies and that it is possible to use sound frequencies to restore the balance of those frequencies when this balance is broken, say through illness.
Pure sounds are used in this process, ranging from the human voice to instruments such as drums, gongs and bowls.
Colour therapy and the other forms of healing therapies are usually grouped together under energy medicine, as they recognize the living energy that permeates our bodies, and how keeping it balance promotes good health.
